Gravitational Shear, Flexion, and Strong Lensing in Abell 1689
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. Fromweak shear measurements alone, we generate a nonparametric mass reconstruction, which shows significant substructure corresponding to groups of galaxies within the cluster. In addition, our galaxy-galaxy flexion signal demonstrates that the cluster galaxies can be well fit by a singular isothermal sphere model with a characteristic velocity dispersion of v 1⁄4 (295 40) km s . We identify a major, distinct dark matter clump, offset by 40 h 1 kpc from the central cluster members, which was not apparent from shear measurements alone. This secondary clump is present in a parametricmass reconstruction using flexion data alone, and its existence is suggested in a nonparametric reconstruction of the cluster using a combination of strong andweak lensing. As found in previous studies, the mass profile obtained by combining weak and strong lensing data shows a much steeper profile than that obtained from only weak lensing data. متن کاملProbing the slope of cluster mass profile with gravitational Einstein rings: application to Abell 1689
The strong lensing modelling of gravitational ‘rings’ formed around massive galaxies is sensitive to the amplitude of the external shear and convergence produced by nearby mass condensations. In current wide-field surveys, it is now possible to find out a large number of rings, typically 10 gravitational rings per square degree. We propose here, to systematically study gravitational rings aroun...
متن کاملGravitational Lens Magnification and the Mass of Abell
We present the first application of lens magnification to measure the absolute mass of a galaxy cluster; Abell 1689. The absolute mass of a galaxy cluster can be measured by the gravitational lens magnification of a background galaxy population by the cluster gravitational potential. The lensing signal is complicated by the intrinsic variation in number counts due to galaxy clustering and shot–...
متن کاملSelf-consistent Gravitational Lens Reconstruction
We present a new method for directly determining accurate, self-consistent cluster lens mass and shear maps in the strong lensing regime from the magnification bias of background galaxies. The method relies upon pixellisation of the surface mass density distribution which allows us to write down a simple, solvable set of equations. We also show how pixellisation can be applied to methods of mas...

The multiple images observed in galaxy cluster Abell 1689 provide strong constraints not only on the mass distribution of the cluster but also on the ensemble properties of the cluster galaxies. Using parametric strong lensing models for the cluster, and by assuming well motivated scaling laws between the truncation radius s and the velocity dispersion σ of a cluster galaxy we are able to deriv...
